About Us
Urban Chickens was founded in 2007 by KT LaBadie and her husband Mark Scully. They live in Albuquerque, NM with two chickens named Gloria and Switters, and two new chicks named Omelet and Buffy.
Why this site?
The idea for this site started when I (KT) gave a presentation in one of my graduate planning classes about the benefits of chickens in urban environments. This presentation sparked a lot of interest from fellow classmates who were unaware of Albuquerque's chicken friendly ordinances and zoning. This prompted Mark and I to start the Albuquerque Urban Chickens group as a way to educate the local public and teach urban chicken keeping classes.
We then decided to expand our local project and UrbanChickens.org was hatched in an effort to organize urban chicken keepers worldwide. This site serves to build an online community where a wealth of chicken related information can be shared. This site also serves to inform policy makers and support citizens in cities that are not yet chicken friendly. By organizing and showcasing successful chicken programs and providing great chicken keeping information, this website can serve as a resource to help the urban chicken movement grow.
We put much time and effort into building this website from scratch and we hope that you find it useful. Please join the Urban Chickens online community today!
Mark and KT's small urban farm
Our little urban farm is a work in progress. We have plum, fig and peach trees. We have 2 chickens, 2 chicks, 3 rabbits and 2 cats. We also have raised garden beds and an herb garden. We are constantly learning and trying new things, and enjoy gathering eggs and vegetables to make omelets.
