Creative And Inexpensive Chicken Coops

If you are inclined at all to building your own chicken coop there's no reason it has to look like any one else's coop, or even look like a coop at all. There's also no need to spend a lot of money. You can often find plenty of scrap materials for free. Remember, scrap in no way means ugly. It's entirely possible to build a coop from scrap that is creative, looks good, and is a good home for your chickens.  read more »

I Need Quotes from Urban Chicken Keepers

I am taking a land use and zoning class this semester for graduate school- and of course my semester research project is on urban chicken ordinances.

I wanted to include some quotes from urban chicken keepers- quotes about how keeping chickens benefits your quality of life, why you do it, etc. It will help to bring more of a personal side to the paper, rather than it just being a technical paper.

Do You Eat Your Chickens?

Elizabeth Jardina, a Sunset Magazine researcher, has a post up called Our chickens are made of meat, which is about an ongoing project they have called Our one-block diet. In this post she responds to a reader's comment urging the group at One-Block Diet to consider eating the chickens they raise, as well as their eggs. Elizabeth's response is thoughtful, nuanced, and got me thinking again about whether we would eat our chickens when their laying days are past.

Keeping Chickens in the City: How NOT to Ruin it for Everyone Else

The coordinator of the Just Food City Chicken Project, in New York City, recently sent me a chapter of their publication "The City Chicken Guide". This guide was designed to educate chicken keepers in NYC about a variety of topics including city regulations and proper chicken care. I pulled the following quote from the guide, as its message applies to urban chicken keepers everywhere.
